Why a Gentle Detox is Perfect Now

30 Dec

This is the perfect opportunity to slow down and tune in to yourself.

Though we may eat lighter in the summertime, our bodies can still build up multiple toxins from rushing to pack in a ton of activities. Certain dietary habits, keeping the kids occupied and technology overload all contribute to the build up.

The juncture between the heat of the summer and winter’s cold provides a perfect opportunity to recognize bad habits and then embrace healthier ones as you transition into fall and winter. I recommend that people synchronize four detoxes a year with each change of seasons. Fall is a natural time of transition when we want to feel more vibrant and clear.

Doing a gentle detox will not only facilitate the removal of toxins from your body, it will strengthen your immune system against wintertime viruses.

7-Day Detox

I offer three specific detox programs, from gentle to very deep and intense. A gentle detox program will reset your body and mind, and my 7-Day Detox program is safe, effective and based on Ayurvedic principles.

Popular cleanses that ask you to take extreme measures are not designed to support you in the long run. They’re meant to help you purge quickly.

When you detox too quickly, you remove some (but not the majority of) toxins so it leaves your body in an imbalanced state.

In my 7-Day Detox program, your body will cleanse itself physically and mentally but you’ll also lose some weight. I’ve had clients lose anywhere from five to ten pounds. Most importantly, you’re nourishing your body with yummy food.

The 3 Doshas of Ayurveda

In Ayurveda’s view, human beings and all of nature are bound by our relationship to the three doshas, the primal, life-sustaining energies here on earth. They are called vata, pitta and kapha.ayur

The vata dosha is associated with the elements of air and ether. It brings creativity and change and tends to wax and wane quite a bit in everyone’s life. Pitta is the dosha of fiery energy and transformation as achieved through metabolism. The kapha dosha is associated with earth and water and provides us with groundedness, stability and growth.

Though we are comprised of all three doshas, we tend to be dominated by one at any given time.

The seasons are governed by the doshas, too. We have accumulated plenty of heat in our tissues from the summer, that fiery energy from pitta. When you add a random blast of air (cool fall weather) to a fire, metaphorically speaking, sometimes things can rage out of control.

That meeting of air and heat can lead to mental, physical and adrenal system burnout, putting some of the body’s natural detoxification processes on hold.

Your Liver is the Key Player

The liver is the body’s natural detoxifier. It processes not only our food and drink but many of the chemicals we encounter daily like pesticides, air pollution or even over-the-counter and prescription medications. When the liver gets overheated with excess fire (or pitta), migraines, irritability, inability to focus or be creative, rashes, anger and weight gain can result.

We collect toxic sludge in our digestive tract made up of all the waste products that the body has not been able to properly break down, digest and otherwise expel because we’re overtaxing our system. We can help the liver’s natural process along with a gentle detox.

Stay tuned next week for specific detox steps…
